The Chesapeake Bay Chapter (CBC) of Women in Defense (WID) awarded two $1,000 scholarships May 23, 2006 at its Annual Scholarship Dinner at the Tides Restaurant in Lexington Park, Maryland. |
![]() | Diane Mattingly and Katie Staso each received a $1,000 scholarship. Both women recently graduated from Leonardtown High School. The scholarship committee, chaired by Rose Frederick, received applications from all three Southern Maryland counties. The principal of Leonardtown High School, Scott Smith, was the event’s keynote speaker and congratulated the recipients and their parents for this distinction. Diane will be attending Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and Katie will be attending the University of Maryland. Supported through CBCWID fundraising efforts and corporate and private donations, the scholarship program is intended to encourage and support women who pursue careers related to the national security and defense interests of the United States. It also provides development opportunities to those individuals who are already working in national security and defense fields. Scholarship awards are made to local women based on their academic achievement, participation in defense and national security activities, field of study, work experience, statements of objectives, and recommendations. The scholarship awardees were chosen in part on their essays depicting how the individual demonstrates leadership potential in science, engineering, and business disciplines. |
